After Criticism, Martha Stewart Deletes Offensive Halloween Costume Photo After Being Accused of Mocking Homeless People

Photo prompts backlash

Stewart reportedly shared the image in an Instagram carousel promoting candles she sells on QVC. In it, she wore torn-looking clothes and face makeup resembling dirt while holding a sign asking for food. She captioned the post, “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!” The photo was removed soon after, but social media users had already saved screenshots.

Criticism spreads online

The deleted image later appeared on Reddit, where users criticized Stewart for seeming to make light of homelessness. Some called the costume “offensive,” “gross” and “out of touch.” Others objected that Stewart, whose estimated net worth is $400 million, appeared to be making fun of people living in poverty. It remains unclear whether that was the intended meaning of the outfit.

No explanation from Stewart

The reason for the photo’s removal has not been made clear. Page Six said it contacted Stewart’s representative for comment but had not received an immediate response. Stewart has long been known for elaborate Halloween looks, including costumes as Queen Elizabeth I and a glamorous sorceress. She has also celebrated the holiday with her close friend Snoop Dogg.
