Goodbye Reacher: Prime Video’s Darker Action Thriller Is So Good, You’ll Finish It This Weekend

A mission turns personal

The Terminal List, based on Jack Carr’s novel, begins with Navy SEAL James Reece returning from a mission that killed his entire platoon. His wife and daughter are then murdered, and he sets out to identify those behind the events.

As Reece pursues the people he believes are responsible, he discovers a conspiracy tied to his last mission. A brain tumor causes him severe pain and complicates his decisions, which can appear irrational to others.

Brutal action and parallel reporting

The show follows reporter Katie Buranek, played by Constance Wu, as she investigates the conspiracy connected to Reece’s platoon. Her work runs alongside Reece’s effort to punish those involved.

The series is known for graphic action, including a scene in which Reece cuts a man open and leaves him to die. The story’s violence is presented as even more extreme than Reacher’s.

A darker story expands

The spinoff The Terminal List: Dark Wolf follows Ben Edwards, Reece’s fellow Navy SEAL and friend, played by Taylor Kitsch. Edwards eventually works for the CIA, while the series explores war’s effects on him and connects back to events in The Terminal List.

Despite negative reviews from critics, The Terminal List held the top spot on Prime Video’s Top 10 for two weeks. A second season was greenlit, but it premiered four years later.

Season two and what comes next

Season 2 puts Reece up against a new threat and examines the effects of his tumor, including thoughts of suicide. Katie has a larger role, working with Raife Hastings, played by Tom Hopper, to investigate a terrorist plot and facing danger herself. There has been no word on a third season. Chris Pratt has described his interest in the story and its lead character, saying, “I read the book and immediately was intrigued.”
