Free Streaming: Mark Wahlberg’s Shooter Officially Shoots Onto Tubi 19 Years Later, a 124-Minute Action Thriller

A grounded action hero

Shooter arrived in 2007, when action films influenced by the Jason Bourne series were reshaping the genre. Mark Wahlberg had recently earned an Oscar nomination for The Departed and was playing cops, gangsters and soldiers.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film adapts Stephen Hunter’s novel Point of Impact. It brought Wahlberg’s portrayal of an ordinary man under pressure to a story of high-stakes action and conspiracy.

Swagger becomes the target

Wahlberg plays Bob Lee Swagger, a former Force Recon Scout Sniper called out of retirement to help prevent an attempt on the president’s life. Instead, he becomes embroiled in a plot to frame him.

Swagger draws on his training and resourcefulness as he confronts corrupt government and military figures. Michael Peña co-stars, while Fuqua’s direction and the film’s action set pieces support its tense, sometimes brutal pursuit of rough justice.

Training for the role

To make Swagger’s weapons handling convincing, Fuqua worked with former U.S. Marine Scout Sniper Patrick Garrity, the film’s military-technical advisor. Garrity also trained Wahlberg individually. Wahlberg attended an intensive boot camp at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. His instruction covered long-range ballistics, camouflage and tactical movement, including the challenges of shooting targets from more than a thousand yards away.

A new streaming audience

Nearly two decades after its release, Shooter continues to attract viewers when it reaches major streaming platforms. It has now been added to Tubi’s free movies list, making it available without a paid subscription.

The film’s continued streaming appeal rests in part on Wahlberg’s gritty performance and the attention given to the sniper’s work. Its grounded approach helped distinguish it from more polished action heroes.
