Slow Horses: What Sets Its 6 Seasons Apart, Ranked by the Case for Each

The Slough House formula

Created by Will Smith and based on Mick Herron’s books, Slow Horses centers on MI5 agents sent to Slough House to do administrative work. Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman, leads the cast-offs as they stumble into terrorist plots, conspiracies and political schemes.

The series sets itself apart from polished spy adventures through its dysfunctional characters and tightly constructed stories. Each season draws on at least one of Herron’s books and unfolds across six episodes.

Season 5’s political plot

Season 5 adapts events from London Rules and follows a coordinated effort to destabilize the UK government and London’s mayoral election. A group of Libyan operatives led by Farouk, played by Monty Ben, carries out attacks and sabotages fuel supplies.

The plot also has Tara, played by Hiba Bennani, exploit Roddy Ho’s vanity to gain access to the MI5 system. The season adds more humor through Roddy, with Christopher Chung singled out for his performance in an interrogation scene.

Season 1 builds the world

The first season introduces River Cartwright, a young MI5 agent sent to Slough House after a failed airport training exercise. His rival James “Spider” Webb, played by Freddie Fox, had set him up to fail.

The team becomes involved in the kidnapping of Hassan Ahmed by the far-right group Sons of Albion. The season is praised for establishing the show’s grounded spy story and for adapting Herron’s novel, while the account says later seasons have generally improved.

Key points

  • Season 5 centers on a destabilization plot targeting the UK government and London’s mayoral election.
  • Roddy Ho’s humor gives Season 5 a lighter workplace-comedy tone.
  • Season 1 introduces River Cartwright and the outcasts of Slough House.
  • The account praises both seasons but does not establish a complete ranking of all six.
