Why a general was pushed from the Pentagon’s Joint Staff role

Removal followed 11 months
Sylvia was removed from his senior position earlier this week and has since retired from the U.S. Army, according to two sources familiar with the situation. He had served for 11 months as the Joint Staff’s director for Strategy, Plans & Policy.
The J-5 handles long-term strategic planning. One source said Sylvia was removed for a lack of confidence, while another said it was unclear whether Hegseth or Caine directed the decision.
Joint Staff confirms his service
A Joint Staff spokesperson thanked Sylvia and his family for 32 years of service to the nation, and wished them well in their next opportunities. Earlier this week, Sylvia was still listed as J-5 director on the Joint Staff website. The current listing shows only Vice Director Maj. Gen. Mark H. Slocum.
Earlier departures from the staff
The J-5 is among the Joint Staff’s most important directorates, alongside the J-3, which is responsible for planning and executing military operations. Last year, Sylvia’s predecessor as J-5, Lt. Gen. Joseph “JP” McGee, retired in October. McGee had been nominated during the Biden administration to become director of the Joint Staff, but was not renominated by the Trump administration; with no other three- or four-star positions available, he had to retire.
