Jessica Chastain's Divisive New Horror Movie Removed From 500 Theaters After Hitting Major Milestone

Theaters and box office

Other Mommy opened in 3,365 theaters on October 9 and added five locations in its second weekend. In its third weekend, it was removed from 572 theaters. The film passed $50 million domestically. Its reported totals are $51.9 million in North America and $43.3 million internationally, for more than $95 million worldwide, against an $18–19 million budget.

A mother faces a threat

Chastain plays a mother trying to protect her young daughter, played by Arabella Olivia Clark, from a supernatural entity that resembles and sounds like her. The entity grows more threatening to the family and pulls the mother into a dark world.

Jay Duplass plays the father. The supporting cast includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Sean Kaufman, Karen Allen and Alec Secăreanu. Rob Savage directed the film, with a screenplay by Nathan Elston based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House.

Low scores, strong earnings

Other Mommy has a 19% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. Reviews cited Chastain’s compelling performance but faulted the film for leaning too heavily into silliness, saying its jump scares do not consistently create a chilling experience.

Audiences gave the film a 48% score. Their criticism included that it does not explore its themes deeply, despite some startling moments. Its worldwide earnings nevertheless show it has found an audience.
