After Blowing a 23-Point Lead, 5 Factors Could Help Pelicans Beat Nuggets for First Win This Year

Attack Denver’s Interior

New Orleans scored 70 points in the paint and 23 on fast breaks in Saturday’s game, building a 73-57 halftime advantage through drives, ball movement and pressure on Denver’s defense. Zion Williamson can challenge the Nuggets near the basket, while Trey Murphy offers a threat as both a shooter and driver.

Murphy led the Pelicans with 26 points, going 10-for-17 and making four three-pointers. With New Orleans struggling from long range, it will need quality chances inside—but attacks on Williamson should also create openings for perimeter shooters.

Protect Possessions And Leads

The Pelicans committed 18 turnovers against Denver and forced 11. Although they had a 17-15 edge in points off turnovers, the extra possessions they gave away became costly.

New Orleans scored 108 points through three quarters, then managed just 18 in the fourth as its offense slowed and became disorganized. Limiting mistakes, especially while holding a lead, would also help keep Denver from finding transition opportunities and regaining its rhythm.

Contain Denver’s Main Threats

Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray combined for 77 points in the first meeting. Murray had 42, including eight three-pointers, while Jokic recorded 35 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.

New Orleans needs to handle screens, contest Murray’s shots and avoid help rotations that leave other Nuggets open. Jokic will force tough decisions, but the Pelicans also need to prevent supporting players from benefiting from defensive breakdowns.

Limit Supporting Cast Chances

Rookie Trevon Brazile contributed 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks for Denver, including seven points in overtime. New Orleans will need sharper communication, boxing out and controlled closeouts to reduce second chances and prevent another role player from changing the game. Denver’s perimeter shooting has been inconsistent, so the Pelicans should make the Nuggets score against a set defense rather than allow open looks or easy baskets.

Consider Rotation Options

Saddiq Bey has been New Orleans’ most consistent offensive performer through three games, and his shooting and floor spacing could help against Denver despite defensive concerns. Mosley also has a decision to consider about Bennedict Mathurin’s minutes.
