From The Traitors to Avengers: Doomsday, Alan Cumming Still Has Tricks Left Up His Sleeve

A host with another side

Cumming’s elaborate outfits and sharp monologues make his presence on The Traitors a signal that a challenge, banishment or murder is coming. Away from the show, he says he builds the host persona as he would any other character, even though it shares his name and face.

He is known for work spanning television, film and theater, with Emmys, Tonys, BAFTAs and Oliviers among his accolades. He has also received recognition for advocacy on animal and LGBTQ+ rights. Despite that record, he says he often feels nervous.

The game tests trust

The Traitors follows a group of Faithfuls trying to identify hidden Traitors. Traitors secretly sabotage the game and murder a Faithful each night, while the group votes to banish suspected players.

If the Faithfuls eliminate every Traitor, they win the money built up during the game. If even one Traitor remains, that player takes the cash. Contestants live together in a remote Scottish castle, separated from the outside world, and Cumming describes the setup as a psychological experiment.

Assumptions about players

Players often form alliances with people they see as like-minded, creating connections while also exposing biases. Careers can become a topic early on, when contestants have little shared history or strategy to assess.

Cumming challenges the idea that some professions make people better suited to the game than others. He points to Abby, an astrophysicist on the new season, whom other contestants frequently turn to for an opinion.

A career still unfolding

Cumming has spoken about a wide range of subjects, from reality television and the MCU to the entertainment industry and difficult moments in his career. His work continues in his 60s, including a Marvel comeback in Avengers: Doomsday.

He also recalls Spy Kids as an early role that introduced him to many viewers. In that film, he played a television host who built henchmen made of thumbs, a character that became part of the movie’s appeal as a comfort watch.

Key points

  • Cumming treats his Traitors hosting persona as a character, separate from his off-camera self.
  • The show’s Faithfuls must uncover hidden Traitors before one of them claims the accumulated money.
  • Cumming says contestants’ professions do not determine whether they will succeed.
  • His career continues in his 60s, including a Marvel return in Avengers: Doomsday.
