After faking his death, Dexter Morgan’s greatest line still stands among TV’s best 20 years later

A defining moment in Season Six

Based on Jeff Lindsay’s novels, Dexter stars Hall as Dexter Morgan, a forensic scientist who hunts other serial killers while secretly being one himself. The series’ dark premise helped make it a success and launch a franchise that continues with Dexter: Resurrection.

The featured line comes in Season 6, episode “Once Upon a Time.” Dexter realizes Harrison has seen him arranging blood slides containing evidence from his victims, prompting him to consider what his son might discover as he grows up. Dexter says, “Monsters don’t get to live happily ever after,” as he resolves to show Harrison only a make-believe version of himself.

Loss shadows the warning

The line is intended to keep Dexter’s true nature from his son, but it also foreshadows the losses that follow. His wife, Rita, is murdered by Arthur Mitchell, known as the Trinity Killer.

Dexter’s relationships with Hannah McKay and Lila West also end badly. Hannah’s tendency to poison others strains their relationship, while Lila is willing to kill Dexter after he rejects her advances.

Debra’s fate deepens the tragedy

Dexter’s deepest loss is his adoptive sister, Debra, who supports him throughout the series. She encourages him as a father, attends his wedding to Rita and tells him he is the one good thing in her life.

Their bond takes a dark turn when Debra discovers Dexter’s double life and is gravely wounded by a serial killer. She enters a vegetative state, and Dexter concludes he cannot truly be happy.

He fakes his own death and switches off Debra’s life support. Although the final season is considered a low point in the series, the moment remains resonant for showing what Dexter’s “Dark Passenger” costs him.
