Two Bystanders Tried to Help Washington Man Killed by Train After Wheelchair Got Stuck Crossing Tracks

Fatal collision at crossing

The man, identified as Geiger, was on the tracks when his electric wheelchair became stuck. Two people nearby attempted to free it, but could not move him to safety before the train arrived, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday. The train involved was a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway freight train, according to local reports.

Police correct witness report

An earlier account said a witness had also been struck. Police told The Independent that report was inaccurate. The correction clarifies that the reported fatality was Geiger’s. The article does not say what caused the wheelchair to become stuck.

Emergency crews responded to the collision, leading to road closures and traffic delays near the crossing. Police are asking witnesses and others with relevant information to contact investigators. Tips can be sent to the Puyallup Police Department at 253-770-3343 or tips@puyallupwa.gov.
