Featuring opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother, Trump defends controversial Ramaswamy ad as Republicans call for taking it down

Trump backs the campaign ad
Trump defended the ad on social media Thursday, saying he would run one like it himself. He described it as “powerful” and urged Ramaswamy to leave it up, despite calls from Republicans to take it down.
Trump also criticized Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who had urged the campaign to remove the ad. Trump suggested DeWine wanted a Democrat to win and did not want someone who would do a better job than he could.
DeWine and others object
DeWine called the ad “deeply, deeply troubling” and said the campaign needed to take it down. He cited his experience prosecuting rape cases and said people have a responsibility to speak up for victims and protect children.
Former Ohio Rep. Jim Renacci also urged Ramaswamy to move away from the attack ad. Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose said his office was reviewing complaints to determine whether the ad violated state law, while noting that candidates make their own decisions about advertising.
What the ad depicts
The ad began circulating on social media late Monday and features Donna Arthur, Acton’s long-estranged mother, accusing her daughter of lying about her past and childhood struggles. Ramaswamy confirmed Tuesday that his campaign made the ad.
Republican reactions differ
Vice President JD Vance defended Ramaswamy’s use of the ad at an Ohio campaign event Wednesday. He said he was disgusted that Republicans were criticizing the ad more than what he described as Democrats’ plans for the country.
DeWine had endorsed Ramaswamy and, according to WEWS, indicated he would continue backing him and the Republican ticket. The dispute is unfolding ahead of Ohio’s high-stakes midterm elections, which include races for governor, Senate and House.
