A 1-year-old was killed as police fired at a car outside Mississippi Walmart, video shows actions leading to fatal shooting

Footage shows parking lot shooting

The footage shows several officers coming out of the Walmart and opening fire as a driver tried to pull out of the lot. The shooting killed Kohen Wiley, who was 1 year old.

Family disputes shoplifting allegation

Wiley’s mother and her friend reject claims that they were shoplifting, their lawyer, Ben Crump, said. Neither has been charged with a crime. Crump said the friend was driving and Wiley’s mother was holding the child in her lap.

State finds force justified

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said her office had completed its review of the June 14 incident in Senatobia. She said the office found the use of force was justified.

The family and Crump called for the body-camera footage to be released after the attorney general decided Monday that the officer would not be charged. Crump questioned how the conclusion could be accepted while the family and public had not seen the footage.

Mayor pledges transparency

Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves said the child’s death had caused pain across the community and expressed sympathy for those involved. He said the city was committed to transparency during the investigation.
