Live: Philadelphia police officer dies from injuries in shooting, another officer injured

A Philadelphia police officer died Saturday from injuries sustained in a shooting in West Philadelphia. A second officer was also wounded and remains in serious condition, officials said.

Police received a report around 1 a.m. of an armed man on the porch of a home on North 52nd Street. When officers approached, the gunman opened fire, Police Commissioner Bethel said.

Officer Seiber was shot three times, Bethel said. The other officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was struck 12 times and has not yet recovered, according to the commissioner.

Police arrested the suspect after pulling him from a tree. Seiber had recently finished SWAT training and hoped to join the unit, CBS News Philadelphia reported.

Officials called attention to the risks officers face. Mayor Parker also urged Pennsylvania lawmakers to consider measures addressing mental health and substance abuse, linking those issues to public safety.
