This startup is issuing AI-generated acne prescriptions

Nolla Health has launched a Utah pilot in which adults use an app to scan their faces. Its AI assesses acne and can issue an initial prescription.

Doctors will approve prescriptions for the first 100 users. For the next group, up to 500, they will review prescriptions after they are issued; later, they will check a monthly sample and cases involving side effects or escalation.

Utah began permitting AI systems to renew some medications earlier this year. Nolla says its program is the first in the United States to use AI for new prescriptions rather than renewals.

The service costs $4.99 per month and is limited to Utah residents aged 18 or older with mild-to-moderate acne. It covers eight treatments, and users will be referred to a doctor when the system cannot confidently choose one.

The pilot’s oversight will loosen as it grows, while doctors remain involved through reviews and referrals. Nolla says the service is meant to handle routine cases, not replace physicians.

Key points

  • The app analyzes facial scans and can prescribe acne treatment to eligible Utah adults.
  • Physician approval and review will decrease as the pilot expands.
  • The service costs $4.99 monthly and covers eight treatments.
