Amber Guyger granted parole after serving 7 years for shooting, killing Botham Jean, officials confirm

Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer, has been granted parole after serving seven years in prison for killing Botham Jean. She was convicted on Oct. 1, 2019, of shooting Jean in his home.
Guyger said she entered the wrong apartment, mistook Jean for an intruder and shot him. She and Jean lived in the same apartment building.
The parole board cited her participation in treatment-plan programs and the absence of a documented history of violent or assaultive offenses. Officials have not announced a release date.
Jean’s family thanked people who continue to remember him. Lee Merritt, who previously represented the family, said he was deeply disappointed and said relatives and community members had opposed parole.
In March 2026, Jean’s family sued Dallas for nearly $100 million. The lawsuit alleges the city’s staffing practices caused fatigue and stress, and notes Guyger had finished a shift of nearly 14 hours before the shooting. The district attorney’s office declined to comment.
