Present simple or present continuous
When to say "I work" and when to say "I am working", with a 10-question quiz.
Present simple: habits and facts
Use it for things that happen again and again, and for things that are always true. Add -s after he, she and it.
- I drink coffee every morning.
- She works in a bank.
- Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
Present continuous: now
Use am, is or are + the -ing form for things happening now, or for a short time around now.
- I am cooking dinner right now.
- Look! It is snowing.
- He is staying with his sister this week.
Some verbs are not used with -ing
Verbs about thinking and feeling, like know, like, want, need and believe, usually stay in the present simple.
- I know the answer. (not: I am knowing)
- She wants a cup of tea.
