Inspired by a friend’s breakup, Justin Timberlake finally reveals ‘Goes Around Comes Around’ wasn’t about Britney Spears, full 20 years later

A rumor addressed at last

Timberlake said during Complex’s “Re-Rank” YouTube series that the song was not a personal story about his own life. He described its source as a friend’s account of a breakup. The track appeared as a single from Timberlake’s 2006 album “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” Many listeners had connected it to Spears because it was released around the time she was divorcing Kevin Federline.

A friend’s breakup inspired it

Timberlake said his friend told him what had happened, and he asked whether he could write about it. He recalled the friend responding, “Yeah, torch that bitch. What goes around comes around.” Timberlake said he wrote the song in “damn near 20 minutes.” He also described its 10-minute music video as helping it “hit on all cylinders” and ranked the track number “one or two” in his discography.

The song tied to Spears

Timberlake said “Cry Me a River,” from his 2002 debut album “Justified,” might be the song associated with Spears. Its video features a Spears look-alike portrayed as having cheated on him. The pair met as children on “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club,” began dating in 1999 and split in 2002. In her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Spears said the video’s release brought a media storm that made her look like a “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.”

Spears’s later comments

Spears also wrote that Timberlake had cheated on her “several times,” without naming anyone. In a January 2024 Instagram post that was later deleted, she apologized for some of what she wrote in her book. She also said she was “in love” with Timberlake’s then-new song “Selfish.” The post included a photo of Timberlake appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
