Ritchie’s 8-Part Mystery Thriller on Prime Video Is Better Than The Gentlemen

A young Sherlock at Oxford

Young Sherlock follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin. After jail time for pickpocketing, his brother Mycroft, played by Max Irons, arranges a scout position for him at Oxford University.

When ancient scrolls go missing, Sherlock is nearby and becomes the prime suspect. With permission from Princess Shou’an, whose donation included the scrolls, he investigates to clear his name.

An unlikely partnership

Sherlock joins forces with James Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn. Rather than beginning as rivals, the two develop a friendship rooted in being outcasts and sharing sharp intellects.

Their wit and teamwork help drive the story as the investigation expands beyond the theft. Sherlock also learns more about Beatrice, his sister who disappeared when they were children.

A mystery with room to grow

The scrolls case leads Sherlock and Moriarty toward a broader conspiracy involving murder, revenge, royalty and past trauma. Personal stakes and accumulating questions build toward twists, while Sherlock is still developing his detective skills.

The first season has eight episodes, and Prime Video has renewed the series for another season. The story therefore has an opportunity to continue, while the show’s central characters and their relationship can evolve.
