Six killed in Krakow shooting: What investigators know about the attack in Poland

Gunfire in the city centre

The shooting began shortly before 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) in Krakow’s Main Market Square, a busy central location and popular tourist destination. Footage showed people fleeing as gunfire sounded.

Armed officers rushed to the scene and exchanged fire with the attacker. Officials said police shot him within three minutes of the attack beginning, preventing further deaths. Shop windows showed apparent bullet damage, and glass lay scattered on the ground.

Victims and suspect identified

Six people were confirmed dead: four women and two men. One was a foreign national, and several other people were injured. Police identified the suspect as a 25-year-old Polish man but released no further details about him. A spokesperson said investigators found many weapons and ammunition in his vehicle. A minister said initial findings indicated inspiration from far-right ideologies, without giving further details.

Officer and witnesses affected

A police officer was shot three times while arresting the attacker and was in a “very critical condition,” a Polish government minister said. The officer was undergoing surgery.
