Neagley’s rise: Lee Child’s official Reacher replacement proves Prime Video’s thriller franchise can last forever

A hit beyond its leading hero

Reacher debuted in 2022 and quickly became one of Prime Video’s biggest shows, competing with The Boys and The Rings of Power. Its success was notable at a time when television productions were spending heavily to attract famous actors.

Alan Ritchson was the best-known name in the original series, while Neagley had even less star power. Yet the spinoff proved popular, strengthening the case for more character-focused stories in the same world.

A different path to Reacher

A 2012 film adaptation of Lee Child’s novels starred Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, alongside Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Jai Courtney and Werner Herzog. Made on a $60 million budget, it earned $218 million and received a 2016 sequel.

Some fans objected to Cruise playing a character described as hulking in the novels, and the sequel received a middling critical response. Ritchson’s version, by contrast, became an immediate hit with audiences and critics.

A changing setting, familiar appeal

Reacher’s first season set viewing records for Prime Video, and the second and third seasons maintained its audience and critical standing. Each short season moved the title character to a new setting rather than building around a stable team.

That approach gave the series a character-led feel distinct from procedural dramas such as NCIS, CSI, Law & Order and FBI. The lack of a regular supporting group might have made a spinoff seem difficult, but Neagley offered another route.

Neagley’s own investigation

In September 2026, the spinoff expanded the story around Maria Sten’s Neagley, a longtime friend and confidante of Reacher. Its first season follows her as she investigates the suspicious death of an old friend.

The case leads Neagley to an illegal human experimentation ring run by a pharmaceutical company and concealed through a commune. She and occasional guest star Ritchson confront the people behind it.

A formula viewers recognize

Neagley’s reported 94% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes suggests the franchise’s appeal does not depend on a major star in every leading role. Reacher also showed that a familiar character could succeed on television with an actor less famous than Cruise had been.

Together, the two series indicate that Prime Video can expand the action-thriller franchise through other characters from earlier seasons. The reported response to Neagley gives the service reason to consider further spinoffs.
