Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Officially Returns This Month With a New Game Expansion

A new Mistborn expansion

Despite its title, The Well of Ascension is not a new edition of the second Mistborn novel. It is the first expansion for Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, a stand-alone game.

The add-on is set to release on November 18, 2026, at a listed price of $24.99. It introduces new cards and mechanics, drawing on events and ideas from the second book.

Cards bought within the game

The deckbuilding game lets players purchase cards during play, rather than relying on booster packs. That design avoids the collectible-card purchasing model associated with Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The expansion explores what can follow a tyrant’s removal, reflecting the more difficult developments in The Well of Ascension. It builds on the core game rather than requiring players to collect cards outside it.

Earlier games and future possibilities

Another Mistborn tabletop game has also drawn on the second book. Mistborn: House War received The Siege of Luthadel expansion in 2021, focused on a major political challenge from The Well of Ascension.

House War did not receive an expansion covering The Hero of Ages, the trilogy’s third book. Whether the deckbuilding game will reach that story remains unclear, though it appears to have stronger momentum.

More ways to enter the Cosmere

Brotherwise Games, publisher of The Well of Ascension, has also supported Sanderson adaptations for tabletop roleplaying. Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive both received adaptations within The Cosmere RPG.

The deckbuilding game offers a shorter alternative for people who do not want to take on a roleplaying campaign. Fans can try the expansion as they await the eventual arrival of Era Three.
