These House and Senate races haven’t been called as vote counts continue

House results still pending

The Associated Press has not called several House races, and the final results are still being determined. In some contests, the remaining count will decide which candidate wins; in others, the party that will hold the seat is already clear.

Some races remain undecided because they are close or because not enough ballots have been counted. Vote counting can take time in many parts of the country, and that delay is described as normal and expected.

California party contests

A few of the outstanding House races are in California, where the two candidates are from the same party. That means the party holding each seat is known, even though the winning candidate is not.

The unresolved candidate contests leave the final House numbers incomplete. The account does not provide the candidates’ names or the number of House races still awaiting calls.

Two Senate races remain

The Senate contests still outstanding are in Alaska and Mississippi. Alaska uses ranked choice voting, and no candidate in its four-person race has reached 50% in the count.

Alaska may therefore move to another counting round later this month. In Mississippi, provisional ballots, known in the state as affidavit ballots, are taking time to count, and fewer than 2,000 votes separate the top two candidates.

Key points

  • Democrats are poised to hold a strong majority in the upcoming Congress.
  • Some California House seats are certain to remain with the same party, but the winning candidates are unknown.
  • Alaska’s four-candidate Senate race may require another round of counting.
  • Mississippi is counting affidavit ballots, with fewer than 2,000 votes between the top two candidates.
