Kubiak Leads Raiders to Cali, Eyes Upset Win vs. His Brother

Raiders set for California test
Las Vegas arrived in California to meet San Francisco, seeking to continue a rebuild that Kubiak said has progressed ahead of schedule. The Raiders have won the games they were expected to win under the first-year head coach.
The matchup renews the teams’ rivalry as former Bay Area neighbors. Kubiak said his past experience with the 49ers had been meaningful, but added that the upcoming contest would be decided by the players.
San Francisco presents major challenges
Kubiak described the 49ers as having a leading offense and defense, with strong coaching and talent throughout the roster. He singled out linebacker Fred Warner, saying, “He’s the best in the league.” San Francisco also acquired defensive lineman DeForest Buckner in a trade with Indianapolis. Kubiak said the Raiders could study Buckner’s past work and called him one of the best at his position.
Injury and roster questions
Starting cornerback Darien Porter is questionable, Kubiak said, but the coach sounded hopeful about his progress. Kubiak said Porter was “working really hard to get back” and improving each day.
Darrell Luter Jr. was named a captain for the week. Kubiak praised his work ethic and contributions as a cornerback, special-teams player and teammate, noting that he will face his former team.
Trust and competition drive team
The Raiders’ running game improved against the Jets, but Kubiak said its production must keep rising through a group effort. He declined to explain how carries would be divided between Ashton Jeanty and Mike Washington Jr.
Kubiak said trust is built through consistent work and production, pointing to Dylan Laube’s performance as evidence that he had earned opportunities. He also praised the examples set by Maxx Crosby and Kirk Cousins in how they prepare and care for their bodies.
