Russell Brand Guilty of Rape and Three Sexual Assaults; International Insider Reports

Verdict and charges

He was not found guilty on all the charges. The report does not specify which remaining charges did not result in convictions.

Custody before sentencing

After the verdict, Brand was taken into custody. He will stay there until his sentencing on Monday, November 9, after a judge denied bail. Kirsty Brimelow, chair of the Bar Council, discussed the bail decision with Sky News. She said the rules change after a conviction, when bail is no longer an entitlement under the Bail Act.

Expected prison term

Brimelow said she believes Brand will receive a prison sentence of between six and nine years. The final sentence will be decided by the judge. She explained that judges may consider immediate custody appropriate when imprisonment is expected and the term is likely to be substantial. In her view, that can mean a defendant begins serving the sentence before sentencing takes place.

Key points

  • Brand was convicted of three sexual assaults and one rape.
  • The allegations concerned incidents between 1999 and 2009.
  • He faced seven charges involving six women and was not convicted on all of them.
  • Kirsty Brimelow expects a prison sentence of six to nine years.
