Friday night reunion: former coach Johnny Jones faces an emotional return to LSU against Texas Southern

A Reunion in Baton Rouge
LSU follows a 100-57 season-opening victory over LSU New Orleans with a Friday matchup against Texas Southern. The game will reunite assistant coach Johnny Jones with the program he led for eight seasons.
Jones coached Texas Southern from 2018 through 2026 and took the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row, from 2021 to 2023. He also recorded 133 wins and multiple SWAC titles there.
Jones Returns to LSU
After his playing career, Jones spent 13 seasons on Dale Brown’s staff before moving to Memphis. He later became LSU men’s basketball head coach in 2012 and held the position through 2017.
Wade said Jones was returning to his alma mater and praised his knowledge of the game and recruiting ability. Wade also said Jones understood the importance of LSU and its brand.
A Difficult Departure
Jones told The Defender that leaving Texas Southern was difficult because of the relationships he had built with people at the school and in the community. He also cited coaching his son, John Jones Jr., and being part of championships.
