Tangled to Thomas Crown Affair: 10 Upcoming Movie Remakes Ranked by Hype

Why remakes keep coming

Filmmakers have revisited classic stories since cinema’s early days, using new technology and creative approaches to reshape them. In recent years, remakes have also offered a way to attract fans of the original films.

Several notable projects are expected in the near future. Their appeal varies, from well-known stories to the filmmakers and performers bringing them to the screen.

Tangled faces high expectations

Disney’s live-action adaptations of animated films have had mixed results over the past decade. Tangled carries expectations for the future of that trend, with casting and creative talent offering reasons for interest.

Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim and Kathryn Hahn are attached to the film. Director Michael Gracey’s credits include The Greatest Showman and Better Man, while cinematographer Erik Wilson worked on all three Paddington films.

Cliffhanger returns to the mountains

The original Cliffhanger was an action thriller built around a crime story and characters climbing at high altitude. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the new version after making Carry-On.

Lily James and Pierce Brosnan are among the cast. The film has moved between release dates as distribution rights shifted, and Vertical plans to release it in Spring 2027.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

DreamWorks followed Disney into live-action remakes with How to Train Your Dragon. The film earned praise for staying close to the strengths of the animated original, with its original director, Dean DeBlois, leading the adaptation.

The success of that film prompted the studio to greenlight a live-action remake of its sequel. Gerard Butler is returning as Stoick, and Cate Blanchett is set to reprise her role as Valka.

A new Thomas Crown Affair

The Thomas Crown Affair is set for another remake, following the 1960s heist film and John McTiernan’s 1999 version. The new project updates the story for another generation. It is one of several upcoming remakes drawing attention through familiar source material and the possibility of a fresh take.
