Mario Odyssey running natively on Apple TV in Nintendo Switch games port using Claude Code, 9to5Mac

A project built for Apple TV

Redditor FloatingFalafel shared TVport on GitHub as a project to recompile Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 game files for Apple TV. It is based on a fork of nxnative and was developed using Claude Code.

Game performance varies

Super Mario Odyssey runs at 60 frames per second, with occasional slight stutters and audio problems near waterfalls. Animal Crossing: New Horizons runs at 30 frames per second, with no issues reported during the developer’s play sessions.

The article refers to the Animal Crossing game once as “Animal Crossing: Horizon,” while elsewhere naming it Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Tears of the Kingdom is also running at 30 frames per second, but remains in progress and is affected by thermal throttling.

Hardware and ongoing work

FloatingFalafel said a fourth-generation Apple TV with 8GB of RAM is needed to support some games, though the current titles run on the third-generation model. A workaround for thermal throttling is available for Zelda.

The developer has set a 75% render scale and is working to add MetalFX upscaling. Separately, another Redditor is developing Nativecade to port Nintendo 64 games to Apple TV; how long projects of this kind will remain available is uncertain.

Key points

  • TVport recompiles Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 game files for Apple TV.
  • Super Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are running; Zelda remains in development.
  • Some titles work on a third-generation Apple TV, while certain games require a fourth-generation model with 8GB of RAM.
  • Another Redditor is working on Nintendo 64 ports through an app called Nativecade.
