Captive writer, vampire-threatened town: 10 best Stephen King books of all time, ranked according to Goodreads

Carrie’s devastating debut

King’s first novel follows Carrie White, a shy, bullied high school student who lives with a deeply religious and abusive mother. After discovering she has telekinetic powers, Carrie faces a cruel prank at prom and unleashes her abilities, bringing devastation to her small town.

The short novel uses excerpts from fictional books, newspapers, and reports, alongside different narrators. King reportedly discarded early pages, but his wife, Tabitha, retrieved them and urged him to continue; the book became a bestseller and launched his career.

Grief and a burial ground

In Pet Sematary, Louis Creed moves his family to a rural Maine town and finds a pet cemetery nearby. After his son Gage dies in an accident, Louis discovers an ancient burial ground that can return the dead, but at a terrible cost.

The story draws on familiar horror themes while relying on complex, believable characters to deepen its effect. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has said that becoming a father made the book more frightening to him.

Vampires and captivity

’Salem’s Lot follows writer Ben Mears as he returns to his hometown and finds residents falling prey to Kurt Barlow, a centuries-old vampire. King sets the familiar vampire story in a small New England town in the mid-1970s, combining supernatural danger with the struggles and secrets of its residents.

Misery centers on bestselling author Paul Sheldon, who is kidnapped after a car accident by Annie Wilkes, a former nurse and devoted fan. She forces him to write a new novel featuring her favorite character, Misery Chastain, while he endures physical and psychological torture in her remote home.
