BioWare’s Final Chapter Is Officially Being Turned Into a Documentary About the Studio Behind Mass Effect

BioWare’s legacy of choices

BioWare built its reputation on games that made players consider the consequences of their decisions. Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Dragon Age franchise gave players choices that could linger after they put down the controller.

Founded in Edmonton in 1995 by three medical doctors, the company began as a basement startup. It went on to make games set in Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars before creating its own fantasy and science-fiction worlds.

Documentary enters production

Producers Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie initially began the project two years before Electronic Arts announced BioWare’s closure last month. They now plan to cover the studio’s final chapter as well as its rise.

Closure reshapes the story

Fennessey said the filmmakers started work before Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released, before the Anthem servers shut down and before the EA buyout was announced. He said the closure meant they now had a responsibility to tell BioWare’s final chapter.

The film’s timeline places its origins before those events, while its expanded focus reflects the later news of the studio’s closure. Its planned 2027 premiere remains a target.
