Ukraine says Russia is giving missiles greater range and larger warheads

Iskander-M range upgrade

The GUR says Russia is developing a modernized version of its 9M723 Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile. Its projected range is 340 to 440 miles, roughly 100 miles beyond the earlier version.

In August, the agency said Russia had used an upgraded Iskander-1000 for the first time over the summer. That missile was altered with a larger engine and launcher to extend its range.

Ukraine’s air defense needs

Ukraine continues to face a shortage of interceptors needed to counter Russian attacks. Kyiv has repeatedly asked its allies to provide more air defense missiles to protect cities from bombardments.

Missile stocks and production

The GUR says Russia has significant stocks of long-range missiles and is increasing production despite international sanctions. Its listed inventory includes Iskander-M and Oniks missiles, along with RM-48U missiles used by the S-400 air defense system.

The agency also names the 3M22 Zircon, an anti-ship and land-attack missile, and 3M14 Kalibr cruise missiles. It says production of the X-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missile remains suspended because of accuracy problems, with available production capacity redirected to other missiles.
