Toshiyuki Morikawa to Voice Doctor Doom in Japanese MCU Dub, Robert Downey Jr. Officially Confirms Actor

Downey announces Japanese casting

Toshiyuki Morikawa will voice Downey’s Doctor Doom in the Japanese-language version of Avengers: Doomsday. Downey revealed the casting in a video message released by Marvel Japan, which also shared a Japanese-language trailer.

The choice adds a veteran of anime and video games to the franchise. Morikawa is known to many gamers for voicing Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7, a villain whose arrival brings trouble for others.

A new role for Downey

Downey spent more than a decade playing Tony Stark, making the character’s voice familiar to audiences through his exchanges with the Avengers and others. His return as Victor von Doom presents a different challenge: making that familiar presence threatening.

The Japanese dub gives viewers another actor’s voice alongside Downey’s performance. For audiences who followed the Japanese versions, the casting carries added weight because another performer previously voiced Stark’s jokes and farewell.

Dubbing history matters

Marvel’s international voice casts have their own histories with its characters. The announcement recognizes that tradition as Downey takes on a new role in the franchise. Morikawa’s experience includes anime and video games, as well as the role of Sephiroth. His casting connects that background with the Japanese release of Avengers: Doomsday.
