Exclusive | ‘Harry Potter’ actors reveal what they think of the TV show – and who’s most active in the cast group chat

A new take on Potter
The Phelps twins said they expect to watch HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, though they have little information about it because they are not involved. Oliver said it would be interesting to see a different interpretation of the story.
The brothers played Fred and George Weasley across all eight films, released from 2001 to 2011. James said they had sent the new actors a message wishing them well, and were giving them room to focus on the show.
Keeping in touch with cast
James joked that he automatically mutes any chat he is added to. He said Tom Felton recently called him out for not replying, making him a notably quiet member of the cast group chat.
Oliver compared the cast’s bond to friendships from school or college: people may go a while without speaking, but reconnect easily. The twins said they keep up with former castmates’ work and send good-luck messages.
Memories from the films
The brothers recalled returning to the film sets while making Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking. They said the sets bring back memories of growing up around British screen actors including Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon.
James remembered Gambon, who played Dumbledore in films three through eight, as a practical joker and said his off-screen manner differed greatly from his character. Oliver said his only Harry Potter item on display at home is a Lego character.
Baking show returns
The Phelps twins are hosting the third season of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking, in which teams compete with treats inspired by the Wizarding world. The show returns November 4 on Food Network at 8 p.m. and streams on HBO Max.
