8 Most Amazing Horror Movies Ever Made, Ranked by Their Lasting Power

Get Out Turns Courtesy Sinister

Chris Washington, played by Daniel Kaluuya, visits the wealthy family of his girlfriend Rose, portrayed by Allison Williams. Awkward questions and the family’s interest in Chris’s body grow more disturbing as he notices strange behavior among Black workers at the estate and Rose’s mother offers hypnosis.

Jordan Peele’s film builds its tension around Chris’s instinct to leave and the social pressure to stay. At a party, Logan, played by LaKeith Stanfield, breaks from his behavior and warns Chris to get out, making earlier encounters seem newly threatening.

A Texas Nightmare Feels Close

Sally Hardesty, her brother Franklin and their friends take a detour through rural Texas, ending up at a farmhouse occupied by Leatherface and his family. The story needs little mythology: entering the wrong house is enough to begin the nightmare.

Directed by Tobe Hooper, the film makes its setting feel hot, grimy and exhausting. After Sally escapes, Leatherface swings a chainsaw in the road as she laughs from a truck; the scene offers no clear sense of victory.

Psycho Shifts Its Focus

Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh, steals $40,000 from her employer and stops at the isolated Bates Motel while fleeing town. Its proprietor, Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins, seems shy and under the influence of his unseen mother.

Alfred Hitchcock’s film moves away from Marion’s crime and toward the motel. Norman’s mix of friendliness, embarrassment and unease makes even an ordinary conversation uncomfortable, while his nervous smile remains memorable beyond the famous shower murder.

A Mother Seeks Help

In The Exorcist, actress Chris MacNeil watches her daughter Regan undergo alarming physical and psychological changes that doctors cannot explain. She turns to Father Damien Karras, a priest and psychiatrist who is already struggling with his faith.

The film’s central anguish lies in Chris exhausting rational explanations and finding that they cannot help her child. Karras begins to suspect Regan may be possessed, as the family’s search for answers grows increasingly desperate.

Key points

  • Get Out turns social pressure and politeness into sources of dread.
  • The Texas Chain Saw Massacre makes a wrong turn feel brutally plausible.
  • Psycho shifts from a stolen fortune to the unsettling Bates Motel.
  • The Exorcist centers on a mother’s search for help for her daughter.
