Netflix AI Discover helps you find something to watch based on mood, TechCrunch reports

Mood-based recommendations launch

Netflix announced Tuesday that it is introducing an AI Discover tab for trying new ways to choose what to watch. The first feature provides recommendations based on what viewers say they are in the mood for. Users can browse curated themes built around mood, viewing preferences, available time, and what is new or trending. Examples include “something light,” “scare me,” “family movie night” and “quick watches.”

Viewers can refine suggestions

After choosing a theme, viewers receive matching recommendations and can select more specific themes to continue browsing. A “something different” option lets them start over.

Netflix tests discovery tools

Netflix says the feature runs on a new intelligence layer that responds in real time to user input and continues learning. The company says the tab is intended to help people navigate its growing catalog rather than scroll through titles without guidance. In a blog post, Netflix said its recommendations already draw on actions such as giving a title a Thumbs Up or adding it to “My List.” It described AI Discover as a “test kitchen” for trying new approaches, with user feedback informing which features to keep or improve before they reach the main Netflix experience.

Initial rollout is limited

AI Discover is beginning to roll out in the U.S. to people who use Netflix in English on supported TVs. Netflix plans to extend access to more users in the coming weeks.

Key points

  • Netflix’s AI Discover tab recommends titles using themes tied to mood, preferences, time and trends.
  • Viewers can refine recommendations, restart the search or exclude titles from future suggestions.
  • The U.S. rollout begins for English-language users on supported TVs, with more users expected in coming weeks.
