First checked bag now costs up to $55 as JetBlue hikes baggage fees for the second time this year

New checked-bag prices

The new fees took effect Tuesday. For most economy passengers, checking one bag on domestic, Caribbean and Latin American routes costs $50 during off-peak periods, up from $39. In peak periods, the price rose to $55 from $49.

JetBlue previously raised checked-bag fees in March by as much as $9, citing rising operating costs. The airline described Tuesday’s change as its second increase in less than a year.

Why costs are rising

JetBlue said the higher bag charges help keep base fares competitive while allowing customers to pay for checked luggage only when they need it. The carrier also pointed to rising operating expenses and jet fuel costs.

Jet fuel was priced at $4.41 per gallon on Monday, compared with just over $2 in January, according to Airlines for America’s price tracker. Fuel is airlines’ second-largest operating cost after labor.

Ways to reduce bag costs

Customers can save up to $15 on their first checked bag by adding it to a trip at least 24 hours before departure, JetBlue said. JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business and JetBlue Premier cardmembers receive one free checked bag for themselves and up to three travel companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members can also check at least one bag free; Mosaic 2, 3 and 4 members receive two free checked bags.

Other airlines raise fees

Delta, United and Southwest have also increased baggage fees this year. The changes come as airlines face higher fuel costs.
