New York reports first child dies from measles in 30 years as vaccination rates fall

A rare death in New York

State officials said the child died in Lewis County, roughly 150 kilometres north of Syracuse. The state had not recorded a measles death for three decades. Hochul called the death a devastating reminder of the importance of protecting people from preventable illnesses. She declared a disaster emergency in early October after cases emerged in neighbouring states and rural New York.

The order expanded who could administer vaccines to include paramedics, midwives and others. It also allowed nurses, alongside doctors, to order testing.

Vaccination and reported deaths

Measles transmission within the United States was halted in 2000, after high vaccination rates were maintained. Coverage has declined in recent years and is now below the 95% threshold cited for preventing outbreaks.

Symptoms and how measles spreads

Dr Henrik Premasundaram, a GP at HCA Healthcare UK, said early symptoms commonly resemble a cold. These can include fever, cough, a runny nose and red, watery eyes; children may seem unusually tired or unwell, and light may bother them.

A rash often appears around the fourth or fifth day, beginning on the face or behind the ears before spreading. Fever may peak then, while small white Koplik’s spots can appear inside the mouth beforehand.

Measles spreads through breathing, coughing and sneezing, and can be passed on from about four days before the rash until four days afterward. Premasundaram advised families who suspect measles to limit contact safely, especially with unvaccinated or high-risk relatives; the NHS also recommends ventilation, disposing of used tissues and frequent handwashing.

When to seek medical advice

Premasundaram advised seeking medical help if a child becomes increasingly sleepy or difficult to wake, has trouble breathing or persistent wheezing, or has a high fever that is not improving. He also urged medical advice for any unvaccinated child or one exposed to a known case.

Measles can cause serious complications, including breathing problems, infections and brain problems, Premasundaram said. The NHS lists pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures among other possible complications.

Key points

  • A child’s death in Lewis County is New York’s first measles death in 30 years.
  • U.S. measles vaccination coverage has fallen below the 95% threshold cited for preventing outbreaks.
  • Measles may begin with cold-like symptoms before a rash develops around day four or five.
  • Seek medical advice for breathing difficulty, worsening alertness, persistent wheezing or a high fever that does not improve.
