37 Years Later, Marvel's Original Vision Quest Series Is Still A Timeless Classic

A major change for Vision
John Byrne’s Vision Quest began during his 1989 debut on West Coast Avengers. Government forces captured and dismantled Vision, who was later rebuilt by Hank Pym. Vision recovered his memories but not the emotions connected to them. In his new White Vision form, he lacked the feelings he had shared with Wanda, putting their marriage under severe strain and ultimately ending it.
Wanda’s children and Vision’s origins
The storyline revealed that Wanda and Vision’s sons were constructs created by Wanda, and that they vanished when she was not thinking about them. Agatha Harkness helped Wanda confront their absence and erased her memories of the boys; they were later reincarnated.
Byrne also revised Vision’s origin. Rather than being made from the deactivated body of the original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, Vision was said to have been built with spare parts from Hammond’s creator, Dr. Phineas Horton. Hammond returned to life and joined the West Coast Avengers.
The story’s MCU influence
WandaVision drew on the comic’s themes of grief and Vision’s altered humanity. Wanda’s powers produced a new Vision and children in Westview, before the series ended with them gone.
The show also brought back the original Vision, rebuilt by SWORD as an emotionless White Vision. Agatha Harkness continued her story in Agatha All Along, which included the reincarnated Billy Maximoff, William Kaplan.
VisionQuest continues the connection
The 2026 VisionQuest series builds on the events of WandaVision and Agatha All Along. White Vision tries to regain his humanity, while the series also features Ultron’s return and Tommy Maximoff’s reincarnated self, Thomas Shepard.
The show has also been revealing new connections between Vision’s origins and Jim Hammond. Like other MCU projects that share names with comic-book stories, it reworks familiar ideas while adding its own storytelling, giving readers reason to revisit Byrne’s influential arc.
