Meta Quest 2 receiving its last OS update soon: Here’s what you need to know

OS support ends in 2027

Meta plans to end OS updates for the Quest 2 after March 2027. The Quest Pro will reach the same endpoint with OS v213, despite being a less popular headset that shares the Quest 2’s chipset.

Meta says security updates will continue for both devices through the end of 2027. The Quest 2 will have received just over seven years of security updates, while the Quest Pro will get two fewer years because it launched in October 2022.

Games will keep working

Meta says it will not remove cross-play multiplayer or block Quest 2 players from access. Games that support the headset can continue to run, provided they do not depend on OS features introduced after March 2027.

Developers must give players six months’ notice before ending support for a game. Meta says Quest 2 owners can keep playing games during this period, though support may dry up quickly after January 2028.

Newer headsets take focus

The Quest 2 remains the best-selling VR headset of all time, with around 20 million units sold. Meta’s follow-up models are the $599 Quest 3, released in 2023, and the $349 Quest 3S, released in 2024.

Meta’s upcoming VR Glasses are priced at $1,299 and are expected to debut early next year. They are described as having a next-generation chipset, a higher-resolution AMOLED display, and a lighter, smaller design than either Quest 3 model.

The company is expected to begin a new generation of OS development alongside the glasses. The Quest 2’s older mobile chip is one reason Meta is ending new feature development and shifting attention to newer hardware.
