Is 'American Hostage' Renewed for Season 2? Creators Reveal Plans as Jon Hamm Series Ends

A finale for season one

The MGM+ thriller’s first season concludes with “Break the Bank,” airing Sunday, November 1, at 9 p.m. ET. The season began in September and consists of eight episodes.

The cast and its creators

William Jackson Harper plays Ben Hairston, Mireille Enos plays Barbara Heckman, Jonathan Tucker is FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally, and Kat Cunning portrays Ibby Hall. Jon Hamm and series co-creator Shawn Ryan told the Los Angeles Times in September they were interested in continuing the show as an anthology. They described an aim to explore pivotal moments in American life and their lasting effects.

An anthology remains an idea

Co-creator Eileen Myers told Collider that the plan was for each season to have a different cast and plot. She said she and executive producer Sharon Hoffman would take over as showrunners for a second season if it moves forward. Myers said the pair had an idea for Season 2 and that Ryan considered it a “wonderful, wonderful idea,” according to Myers. Hamm also said there were many possible stories to tell, while noting there were “almost too many.”

No renewal or release details

American Hostage has not been officially renewed for a second season. No premiere date, cast or storyline for a potential new season has been announced. Ryan would step away as showrunner if the series returns, Myers said. The proposed anthology format would allow the show to move to a new story and cast, but its continuation remains uncertain.
