Lincoln Lawyer Season 6: Netflix Puts the Ball Fully in Its Court

Netflix Holds the Decision
The Lincoln Lawyer has become a popular Netflix legal drama, but its renewal prospects are not controlled by multiple networks or services. In a Threads post, author Michael Connelly answered a fan seeking season 6 with the words, “That’s a Netflix decision.” Netflix has chosen to end the original series after its upcoming fifth season, scheduled for 2027. The show would return beyond that point only if the streaming service reverses its cancellation.
From Books To Television
Connelly began writing The Lincoln Lawyer novels in 2005, starting with a book of the same name. The story reached screens in a 2011 film starring Matthew McConaughey; Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays defense attorney Mickey Haller in the Netflix series.
Haller, named for the Lincoln town car from which he runs his practice, appears in eight Connelly books and four seasons of the show so far. The character is a recovering addict who pursues justice while managing personal challenges.
A Hit Facing An End
The series features Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Constance Zimmer, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Cobie Smulders. Season 4 rose to the top of Netflix’s most-watched shows, yet that success has not changed the announced plan to end the series after season 5.
A spinoff starring Smulders as Haller’s half-sister, Emi Finch, is in development. Connelly’s earlier Bosch adaptation, meanwhile, expanded into Bosch: Legacy and Ballard, with Bosch: Start of Watch also upcoming.
Why Shows May Stop
Streaming series can become more expensive as casts and crews gain leverage to negotiate higher pay and better contracts. The article also points to the end of traditional syndication as a reason services may not benefit from extending a show’s run.
On network television, reaching 100 episodes can help a hit such as Abbott Elementary enter national syndication and generate residuals. That incentive does not apply in the same way to a Netflix series that does not air on traditional television.
