Prime Video’s 8-Episode Blade Runner Series Continues a Modern Masterpiece

A New Era for Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2099 shifts the franchise from films to an eight-part limited series. Amazon’s MGM studios greenlit the project, with Ridley Scott returning as an executive producer. The series is scheduled to arrive November 25, 2026.
The story takes place half a century after K, played by Ryan Gosling, uncovered a secret about replicant reproduction. He gave his life protecting the biological child of a former Blade Runner. In the new era, replicants are the dominant species.
Olwen and Cora’s Uneasy Alliance
Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, an aging replicant who may be nearing the end of her life. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive human who has taken on a blade runner’s identity to survive. The two are tasked with hunting a runaway replicant concealing a dangerous truth.
Their partnership is uncertain, and the target’s identity becomes less clear as events unfold. Yeoh said Olwen “knows that time is running out” and does not like leaving things unfinished. Cora, meanwhile, has spent her life moving from place to place to avoid discovery.
A Familiar Creative Team
The series brings together a new cast and creative team while retaining connections to earlier films. Silka Louisa is the showrunner, Michael Green is a co-writer, and Paul Inglis, the production designer on Blade Runner 2049, is returning.
The change to television raises questions about how the franchise’s audience will respond to a longer story and a streaming release. The series will be watched at home rather than in theaters, a different setting from the films’ communal screenings.
