Turnover-Free Jayden Maiava Backs Lincoln Riley as USC Stuns Ohio State in Upset

Maiava praises team and coach

Maiava completed 15 of 22 attempts for 22 yards and a touchdown, avoiding turnovers in the upset. He credited the defense after the game, calling it a major team victory.

The defense allowed 464 yards but held Ohio State to nine first-half points and stopped the Buckeyes in the red zone late. It recovered a fumble, recorded two sacks and seven tackles for loss, and hit the quarterback once. Two turnovers were overturned.

After USC’s loss to Wisconsin, Riley faced scrutiny over his job security. Maiava defended him during the practice week and later praised Riley, the staff and the players’ commitment to one another. The victory was Riley’s second against an AP top-five team.

Mosley sparks USC early

Freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley quickly connected with Maiava. On the second play of USC’s opening drive, Mosley took a screen 69 yards for a touchdown, putting the Trojans ahead. He also returned a punt 44 yards in the first quarter.

Rushing attack finds its footing

USC’s ground game had struggled against Wisconsin, gaining negative 17 yards while senior running back Waymond Jordan stayed on the sideline. Against Ohio State, Jordan returned and had 12 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown, along with two catches for 17 yards.

Redshirt-sophomore King Miller led the rushing effort with 78 yards and a score on 13 carries. The improved run game helped Maiava deliver a clean performance.
