Googlebook detachables coming soon, but Google’s tablet plans raise OS questions

Google outlines its next form factor

At the Android Dev Summit 2026, Google said Googlebook detachables would follow clamshells and convertibles. The company highlighted the range of large-screen form factors during Wednesday’s developer keynote.

The announcement was not unexpected, given leaks earlier this year. Google described detachables as coming soon, but did not provide a launch date in the remarks reported here.

Current software has limitations

The Acer Googlebook 14, priced at $899, is the only convertible cited in the report. Its 2-in-1 design supports laptop, tent and tablet modes. Some early limitations suggest work remains before a pure detachable launches. Fullscreen apps can open in portrait tablet mode, but the Googlebook OS homescreen or desktop, Overview and app tray are available only in landscape.

Lenovo device reportedly leaked

Lenovo is expected to make the first Googlebook detachable, according to a July leak. The reported tablet includes a detachable keyboard and kickstand, along with a Glowbar beside the camera.

Questions for Android tablets

Googlebook OS coming to tablets raises questions about which system will serve high-end Android tablets in the future. The report says there should still be room for tablets running Android. Googlebook OS could offer a more desktop-like experience as Google continues iterating on the system.
