From qualifying to the top 100: Harriet Dart wins first WTA title, beating Lilli Tagger in Guangzhou Open final

A hard-fought final

Dart was twice caught after taking a lead in the deciding set against 18-year-old Tagger, the 2025 French Open junior champion. She held two championship points on Tagger’s serve in the ninth game, but sent the second opportunity into the net.

Dart recovered to close out the biggest match of her career. Tagger is ranked 53rd in the world, while Dart began the tournament ranked 115th.

A breakthrough tournament

The title completed a remarkable week for Dart, who qualified for the WTA 250 event before reaching her first tour-level final. Her win means she will enter the Australian Open main draw directly when the season’s opening Grand Slam takes place in January.

The latest rankings, due on Monday, will move Dart into the world’s top 100. She had previously reached a career-best ranking of 70th in 2024.

Strong hard-court form

Dart has won 19 of her 24 tour-level matches on hard courts since Wimbledon. This season, she has recorded 23 wins from 34 WTA Tour matches, the strongest winning percentage of her career. She reached the Wimbledon third round and the US Open second round in 2024, but had spent most of the past two seasons outside the top 100.
