Anthropic plans to give back: philanthropy gurus weigh its efforts and pledges

Cofounders pledge stock

Anthropic’s seven cofounders said they have pledged 80% of their personal stock in the company to charitable causes. Their gifts could be worth $80 billion combined. The IPO filing also described a donation-matching offer for new employees. For every share an employee pledges to give to good causes, Anthropic creates another share to match the donation.

Employee matching program

Anthropic said 25% of one group, offered a match of up to 50%, pledged the full amount. Among the group offered a 25% match, nearly 30% pledged the full amount.

Experts praise the structure

Dr. Vandana Arcot, founder and CEO of philanthropic strategy firm Komselj, called the program well-designed. She said embedding giving in compensation makes generosity the default. Arcot described the approach as rooted in accountability rather than abundance. She also pointed to Anthropic’s $200 million commitment this summer to research preparing people for AI’s economic impacts, saying advance commitments invite public judgment.

Questions about lasting impact

DeVaan cautioned that the cofounders’ pledges are not legally binding and can be revoked. She said personal interests could outweigh public benefit, which is why voluntary efforts alone cannot be relied on.

Another commentator said positive attention for Anthropic’s giving could distinguish it from competitors and offset negative news about AI. The technology has drawn concerns over job losses, environmental damage, cybersecurity threats and potential danger to people; the commentator also warned that pledges may not be fulfilled or could direct much of the funding to a narrow area such as AI safety.
