deadspin: Rockets strive for better defensive play against an undermanned Thunder

Dallas exposes Houston’s defense
The Mavericks shot 51.9% from the floor and held a 28-10 edge in fast-break points. Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving combined for 68 points on 65.8% shooting, including 27 in the fourth as Dallas came back from an 11-point second-half deficit.
Coach Ime Udoka said Houston must defend even when its shots are not falling. He also pointed to transition defense, saying the Mavericks capitalized when Rockets players were slow to get back and set.
Houston missing two players
Alperen Sengun and Reed Sheppard missed the Dallas game with back ailments. Neither was described as a leading defensive presence, so the problems Houston showed against the Mavericks remain an issue regardless of the rotation.
The loss followed a five-game start in which strong offense helped obscure defensive concerns. Dallas’ second-half scoring brought those weaknesses into focus.
Thunder adjusting to absences
Oklahoma City lost to Dallas by 24 points on Wednesday while missing several contributors. Jalen Williams, listed with an ankle injury, and Cason Wallace, listed with a shoulder injury, potentially could be out for the season; Alex Caruso and Chet Holmgren were also unavailable.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said the group would improve with experience in those roles. He described the adjustments as useful for broadening players’ games as they get more opportunities.
Gilgeous-Alexander calls for more
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said Oklahoma City needs to rebound better and show more toughness while playing smaller. He said improved work on the glass could limit second-chance points and help the team play faster. Gilgeous-Alexander also said he needs to do better when he has opportunities to win games, particularly with teammates unavailable.
