Netflix’s Gritty War Thriller Is Officially Demolished by Critics as Reviews Fall

A wartime story meets football

Directed by Peter Berg, the thriller made its theatrical debut on Friday, October 30. Netflix is giving some of its films limited theatrical releases before they become available to stream, as it pursues Oscar recognition for several titles.

Reviews push the score lower

The Mosquito Bowl began with a 42% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. As additional reviews came in, that figure fell to 33%. Collider’s Maggie Lovitt said the film has familiar strengths associated with Berg’s work, but called it an “exceedingly by-the-books film” that brings little new to war epics. She said Nicholas Galitzine’s performance helps the movie, while questioning whether its historical depiction was accurate or fair.

Critics question its impact

ScreenRant’s Liz Declan agreed that the film “misses the mark,” criticizing its use of violence. RogerEbert’s Robert Daniels described it as “lacking in humanity.” The reviews point to concerns about both the film’s storytelling and its handling of historical events. The falling score reflects the mixed response as critics continue to weigh in.
