Chargers Turn Play-Calling Over to Mike McDaniel for Rams Matchup

McDaniel to call plays

After weeks of rumors about a change to game-day operations, Jim Harbaugh confirmed Mike McDaniel will handle play-calling against the Rams. McDaniel is in his first season as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator.

The Chargers enter Sunday at 0-6, while the Rams are 3-4. Though the Chargers are listed as the road team, both teams will play at SoFi Stadium.

Offense under pressure

McDaniel said the responsibility and scrutiny were understandable given the team’s record. He described producing results as part of the job and said he had no different expectation.

Earlier in the week, quarterback Justin Herbert defended McDaniel, saying the players needed to do their jobs and make plays for the coaching staff. ESPN statistics show Herbert has a 29.3 adjusted QBR, last among qualified passers.

Results shape outlook

The Chargers are set to finish October ranked 28th in the NFL, averaging 287.2 yards per game. They rank last in scoring, with 15 points per game this season.

McDaniel said he was focusing on the opponent and on finding ways to improve, rather than on outside discussion. As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Chargers as 6.5-point road underdogs against the Rams.
