How the HBO 98-Episode Sci-Fi Series Successfully Survived 2 Cancellations
A series brought back twice
Young Justice follows younger DC superheroes working together under the Justice League’s guidance. The animated series began on Cartoon Network in 2010 and ran for two seasons before its cancellation in 2013, after a Mattel toy deal fell through.
Fan support and the creation of the DC Universe streaming service helped bring the show back. In 2017, it was revived for a 26-episode third season.
Another shift in home
The DC Universe service was dissolved in 2021, leaving the series in limbo again. DC properties then moved to HBO Max, where Young Justice received a fourth season of 26 episodes.
The show therefore continued after cancellations on both Cartoon Network and DC Universe. Its fourth season was the last produced, and its story left some possibilities open for future adventures.
An ending left uncertain
The series’ showrunners have said they have plans for several more seasons, but another renewal appears unlikely. Since the fourth season’s story in 2022, the DC Universe has been rebooted under James Gunn’s direction.
Writer Greg Weisman has said the series will never have an ending, regardless of whether it is renewed. He described an approach modeled on DC comics, where the universe and its characters continue beyond what appears on screen.
A possible influence on DC
Young Justice may still affect Gunn’s DCU even without further seasons. The article says its handling of mature themes through younger characters helped build a dedicated fanbase. Future DC projects could draw on its tone, character arcs, or storylines, or pay homage to them. That would extend the series’ influence without bringing it back as a DCU Elseworlds project.
