Threads of Time: Chrono Trigger Meets Final Fantasy in a Stunning SNES-Inspired RPG

A journey through eras

Threads of Time moves between sharply different periods, including a world where humans and dinosaurs coexist and a future society with its own dangers. The new trailer on Balor Games’ YouTube channel showed these settings and announced a Summer 2027 release window.

Developer Riyo Games and publisher Balor Games are building the adventure with 2.5D pixel art. Handcrafted 2D characters appear against three-dimensional environments, with Unreal Engine 5 used for modern lighting and visual detail. The result contrasts retro-style sprites with settings that range from prehistoric landscapes to neon-lit futures.

Heroes from different periods

Players can recruit characters from across time to confront a threat that could unravel the past, present, and future. The story centers on restoring the Order of the Time Knights and uncovering secrets linking different civilizations and eras.

The party includes Rye, a young swordsman with mysterious ties to the legendary Time Knights. Luna is an adventurous ally who wields fire, while Rin is a kitsune who defends vulnerable people in a future dominated by wealthy corporations.

Classic combat with team attacks

The game uses turn-based combat, but battles also let players combine character abilities for powerful team attacks. Time-based mechanics can disrupt enemy defenses, adding another layer to fights.

Threads of Time takes inspiration from classic Japanese RPGs, including Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, while telling its own time-travel story. Its appeal will depend on how well its combat, characters, and story work together in the finished game.
